Open California citator
Status: Pilot in progress.
Summary
An open pipeline that flags California opinions saying an earlier case was overruled or disapproved. Pilot on volume 39 of Cal.4th (39 opinions, 5,905 full case citations): precision 27 of 28 kept rows (96%, Wilson 95% CI 82% to 99%); recall on a held-out set of judicial treatments 9 of 13 (69%, CI 42% to 87%). Labelled so far by one annotator, the agent itself; a second annotator and agreement statistics are pending. It is not a substitute for Shepard's or KeyCite.
Scope
- Source: open case-law text through 2016, plus a nightly pull of new published opinions from courts.ca.gov.
- Recall is measured only on sentences a broad keyword search can reach, so the true recall denominator is probably larger.
- Published output will be citations, treatment labels and hashes. Opinion text is not republished while the source license is unverified.
- Next: a second annotator and adjudicator, then resolving short-form citations, the largest source of misses.
Method
Every hub follows the same method: hashed inputs, preregistered measures, a second-annotator check where labels matter, and a verifier in a separate agent context before anything is called a result.
